As one of the most isolated towns in the state, Hana is known for the fifty-two mile highway that winds its way through upcountry Maui along the island’s northern shore. Although a limited number of commuter flights to the Kona, Hilo, and Honolulu are operated on small propeller planes, the road is the primary point of access to the quaint Hana area. While the road is quite long, a number of swimming holes are situated just off of the highway as part of the Haleakala National Park.

Some people may say that the journey to Hana and its associated car sickness may not be worth it. However, most tourists agree that the desintation is well worth the trip, even for the day. Attractions in Hana include Kahanu Garden, Kaia Ranch Tropical Botanical Gardens, Hana Beach Park, Hana Ball Park, Pailoa Bay, Hamoa Beach, and Wainapanapa. The highway also runs past a number of untouched black sand beaches and breathtaking waterfalls. Because the scenic road takes so long, the majority of visitors choose to find Maui vacation rental homes in Hana to allow them to stay for a few nights. Because there are only two hundred properties in Hana, most vacation rentals in the area are booked months and sometimes years in advance.
